CHINA-CHOLA

One of the components of the processes of formation of nations is immigration, one of the most dynamic and influential cultures has been China, it is estimated that 15% of the Peruvian population is of Chinese origin, the product of a meeting of ancient cultures. Despite the historically complex nature of this process, at the beginning of that period there were situations of marginalization that alternated with others of full coexistence. Chinese culture has been integrated into our local life, especially in Lima and different parts of the country.

My connection with China dates back to my experience as a student at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing where I was able to receive the influence of its aesthetic and cultural values. In my work titled “China Chola” I try to reflect this result of miscegenation through the image of a Peruvian girl with Chinese roots.

Within the compositional scheme I present different archival images of Chinese immigrants in Peru, which show different stages of this immigration and square geometric shapes of different shades that symbolize that framework and assembly of miscegenation and its consolidation process.
